Happy Birthday. You are 9 years old now. That’s half way to 18, and only 3 years away from 12. At 12 you are considered a man who can make most of his own decisions. At 18 you have full legal control of your own affairs. Already, you are no longer a little kid. I love you and I’m proud of you.
In this world, everything is built around seasons. Not just summer, winter, spring, and fall, but all kinds of seasons for all kinds of things. There is a season of life to be a carefree child; and there is a season of life to face the challenges of the world. There are seasons of love and close relationships; and there are seasons to be alone. There are seasons of joy, and of pain. But each season has its own value. Each season shapes a different part of our soul. It’s the seasons that make us wise and full of vitality. So all we have to do to have a good life is to fully experience whatever season we are in. This is my wish for you.
You have had a fun season as a boy with Grammy and Ba ba. I know that you lived that season fully. And I’m proud of you for it. Now that you are getting older, the world will start to reveal itself to you more and more. The next few years will be a season of facing the big wild world. It’s a dangerous season, but don’t be scared. In fact, learning to not have any fear is the main purpose of some of the most epic and stormy seasons we go through. Don’t be scared of anything, son. I believe in you.
Joseph in the Bible had a fun season as the beloved child of his father. Then he had a season as a dreamer. Then a season of being hated by everyone, followed by a season of prison. But those seasons gave way to a season of wealth and power. And Joseph was the kind of man who could handle that season of wealth and power because all the seasons before that had made him a man of wisdom, love, and courage. And when Joseph met his brothers again after all those years in prison, he created, out of his season of power, a season of mercy and kindness for his brothers.
Joseph lived his seasons. That’s what made him a great man. That’s what makes all great men great. Seth, I see a great man in you. You have what it takes for everything that lays before you. Go, and live your seasons. You will not fail.
I Love You,
